What’s in My Diaper Bag: Essentials from a Mom of 3 Under 3.5
As a mom of three under the age of 3.5, I’ve changed more diapers on the go than I can count. Over time, I’ve learned what’s truly essential when heading out with babies and toddlers — and what can stay at home. Whether you're a new parent or just looking to streamline your diaper bag, here’s what I pack for every outing:
Side note: Now - while this looks and sounds very organized I would also like you to know that I was recently with some friends and when my baby needed changing, I realized I forgot the "oh-so-organized" diaper bag. One friend handed me wipes and a diaper while another handed me a changing pad. So if you leave the house without something essential — you're not alone, you're not failing, and you're doing just fine or so I tell myself ;).
✅ Extra Outfit
Because babies are unpredictable — enough said.
🍼 Bottle (Pre-filled with Water if Using Formula)
By the time I had my third baby, I discovered my favorite: MAM glass bottles.
With my first, I went down the rabbit hole of testing every bottle under the sun, thinking he would have a favorite. Spoiler alert: unless your baby has specific feeding challenges, they’ll likely adapt to whatever bottle you consistently use.
I even bought those “bottle sample packs” — don’t waste your money. Pick one and stick with it.
A total game-changer. You can pre-measure each compartment and just pour into the bottle when needed.
With my first, I carried a bulky container of formula and a scoop, trying to measure with one hand while holding a screaming baby with the other. Never again.
Our go-to is Coterie. I love their clean ingredients and feel confident knowing they’re safe for my baby’s skin.
👕 Bib
We use Lemoine bibs, of course.
🧦 Socks
Jackson weather can turn chilly fast, so I always throw in a pair of extra socks.
🧻 Burp Cloth
You can never have too many.
💤 Pacifier
Much like bottles, I tried all the trendy ones at first — even those “pacifier sample packs.” Honestly, it's mostly marketing.
We’ve landed on MAM pacifiers. They’ve been sturdy and reliable. I tried the adorable BIBS pacifiers too, but after my oldest bit the nipple off one, I was out.
We call pacifiers “Baboos” in our house — feel free to adopt it. It’s hilarious hearing toddlers ask for them.
For those times when you can’t find a trash can. These are a must for sealing up the stink.
🧼 Diaper Changing Mat (Cloth)
I’m obsessed with these. They fold up easily, sold in a pack of 3, go right in the wash, and have a waterproof backing for protection. We use them both at home and on the go.
These are the items I swear by after three babies and countless outings. Whether you’re a first-time parent or deep into toddlerhood, I hope this list helps you feel more prepared (and a little less chaotic) next time you pack your bag.
